Gray Divorce on the Rise as a Result of Longevity

GrayD

If you’ve been married for a while, maybe the doldrums have kicked in and you find yourself feeling somewhat disconnected from your spouse. Maybe you still love one another, but you feel that the excitement and passion that defined your early days together has fizzled. Even though you’ve had a satisfying marriage in many respects, now the romance is gone, and you’ve considered leaving, too. If so, it doesn’t necessarily mean that your marriage was a failure. It could mean that, after building a life together, raising a family, and sharing many, many goals, your paths, like those of so many older couples, have diverged. These days gray divorce is on the rise, and there are some significant reasons for this.

Numbers Worth Knowing

Divorce among couples aged 50+– gray divorce–has skyrocketed since the 1990s. Prior to that, less than nine percent of all divorced couples occurred among this age group, while nearly 40 percent of divorces today involve older individuals. What gives?

Longevity and Divorce

Who would have guessed that higher gray divorce rates would be a by-product of living longer? It turns out that, with advances in medicine, people can expect greater longevity. For some Americans, those extra years may have the potential for more adventure, fulfillment, and satisfaction. Thirty years ago, a retiree might plan on another 10 years to enjoy life. And if that life wasn’t necessarily the most satisfying one, there just wasn’t enough time to cut bait and start all over, so making the marriage work was the best option. Nowadays, retirees may have two or three decades ahead of them–plenty of time to create a new and exciting connection with someone else. Even if the marriage was necessarily horrible, the idea of spending another 30 years feeling ho hum about it just doesn’t make sense when there is a potential for something more with a little effort. Sometimes marriage counseling can provide a needed boost for couples. But sometimes it’s just time to move on.

Care-Giving

Another factor related to gray divorce and longevity is the fact that some people live longer, but are not necessarily healthy enough to really enjoy life. Although many vows include the words, “in sickness and in health,” the amount of care a partner may need can be overwhelming. If one spouse needs to live in a care facility, life can get pretty lonely for the healthy one left behind. Thoughts of finding some companionship are not far-fetched, even when feelings of responsibility for an ailing partner are very real.
