Take The Edge Out Of Your Divorce

ArguingCouple

Divorce is exponentially more difficult for some couples than others.  That being said, there is no reason it has to be totally miserable.  Some couples manage to keep things a little smoother than others.  What can you do to improve the odds for your own divorce?

  • Stay on top of your emotions: Likely you’ll be feeling anger, frustration, disappointment, jealousy, fear… it can all be overwhelming, which can make decision-making perilous. Acknowledge that your feelings are legitimate, but recognize, too, that temporary emotions should not dictate how you handle judgements that will have long term impacts. If you feel yourself getting overwhelmed, invest some time with a good counselor.  Additionally, make sure you have an attorney whose advice you trust, and really try to focus on the future.
  • Have a little respect: It may be tempting to show off your new love interest or brag about how great life is for you without your ex to hold you back, but you’re honestly just asking for trouble when you rub your ex’s nose in your happiness.  Avoid any behaviors that discourage cooperation and compromise, or it will cost you in the end—quite literally.
  • Along those lines, be discreet on social media: Even if you’re not actively attempting to poke at your spouse, a seemingly innocent photo or comment could stir up feelings of revenge.  So be careful about what you post.
  • Be thorough when it comes to documenting important interactions: If your spouse has threatened you, be sure to keep track of all communications that you will need in order to preserve your own or your kids’ safety.  There are apps out there that do the tracking for you.
  • Be straightforward and honest when listing assets: Whether it’s a hideaway apartment, a safety deposit box, clandestine stocks, or anything else of value, you can be pretty sure their attorney will find it if you fail to list it.  At that point you will have enraged your spouse, and likely the judge, as well.

Keep your kids’ best interests front of mind. It’s going to be a major change in their lives as it is; try to prevent as much emotional bruising as possible.  Keep your negative thoughts and interactions with your spouse out of their view, avoiding unnecessary misery for these innocent little ones.  Instead, love them, protect them, and make decisions that will benefit them.
