Divorcees Need to be Schooled…in Parenting

If you are the parent of a minor child and are heading for a divorce, you probably already know that the process can be disruptive to the family, and especially for children. That’s why in Florida parents and any children between the ages of six and 17 are required to attend a divorce education program before the divorce can be finalized. Day, night, and weekend classes are offered in a variety of venues statewide and must be approved by the Florida Department of Children and Families.

Divorce Impacts Kids 

While some children appear to understand and adjust to divorce with few problems, others tend to have difficulty with it. It can impact their academic performance, social interactions, behavior, sleep patterns, and even overall health. That’s why it’s so important for parents and other adults who play a significant role in a child’s life to do what they can to help kids deal with their emotions during this tumultuous time.

 Adult Classes 

The classes are mandatory for both spouses and are just four hours long. They are generally offered both in person and online, and spouses needn’t attend together. The purpose of the classes is to help parents understand the importance of working together on behalf of their children. It is designed to help parents assist their kids as they adjust to the changes in their lives. While children are not allowed to attend with their parents, other significant others, including stepparents, and grandparents, are more than welcome. There is a minimal fee—usually between $18 and $40, but that can be waived for people who have an income below federal poverty parameters. The class is also offered in Spanish. Additionally, certain courses are available that offer services for those with disabilities.

Children’s Classes 

Classes for children are a bit shorter, at just three and a half hours, and are designed to help children understand and express their feelings about the divorce. They will have the opportunity to engage in a number of activities based on their age and ability, including role play, artistic expression, and creative writing. Parents are encouraged to join in the last half-hour of classes (as long as there is no restraining order) to discuss any problems or issues related to the divorce.  That means the children’s and parents’ classes need to be scheduled at different times. These classes have the same cost and waivers as the adult classes.

What Happens if We’re Not Interested in Classes? 

Classes are mandatory. Failing to attend could mean your divorce will not be finalized.  In some cases, parents may be found in contempt of court, which has its own set of consequences.
