Divorce When the Grass is Greener on the Other Side: An Analogy

DivorceThought

If you are thinking about getting a divorce because there’s just no spark at home anymore, you’ve likely fallen prey to the old adage that the grass is greener on the other side. While that may very well be true, so too is the notion that the grass is greener that gets watered. Perhaps, if you are facing indecision on the matter, it’s worth considering the analogy to decide whether divorce is really the next step for you:

  • Maybe you’re just not into yard maintenance. Having to water the lawn is annoying enough–but just thinking about dealing with every pesky weed that comes up is beyond you. It turns out you’d be happier without the responsibility of having to take care of a yard. Fair enough. It’ll be better for you and your lawn for someone new to take care of–and reap the rewards of–a well maintained yard.
  • Maybe you would love to do a better job in your yard, but you have been pulled in so many directions that you literally have no time to even think about yard maintenance. It’s become a millstone around your neck. If that’s the case, perhaps you need to shuffle your priorities a little. What can you give up to ensure you give a little more to your yard, and in turn derive a little more pleasure from it?
  • Maybe you have sincerely tried to maintain that lawn, but it’s been corrupted by a fungus or pest that has you bewildered, and you have no idea how to get that lush green lawn you once had. You’d better decide if the lawn is worth fighting for or if it’s time to rip the whole thing out and start over.
  • Perhaps you’ve treated this lawn like every other lawn you’ve ever had, and it’s just not working. Don’t you realize that there are different kinds of grass, soil, and nutrients, and that what worked in one yard may not work in this one?
  • Or are you an intermittent yard warrior, who ignores the lawn for weeks at a time, and then tries to revive it in one weekend of devoted attention? And it works–until you let another few weeks of neglect pass by and notice it’s become an eyesore all over again.

Marriage is Like a Yard

If it isn’t clear enough yet, marriage requires commitment. You have to provide regular attention to it and address the little “weeds” that come up on occasion. It has to be a priority in order to have the relationship you want. It should go without saying that every marriage is unique, and requires a personal touch, a consistent devotion, and regular maintenance. If you’re ready to rip it up and start over, divorce may be the next step for you.
