Divorces Surge Post-Election

Have you discovered that your spouse isn’t the person you thought they were, and that realization came about as a result of political differences? It appears that some couples are finding that following the 2024 election results, differing political opinions have shed light on personal philosophies and values, and that has not been a pleasant revelation. When married partners see the political sphere in a completely different light, it can make a happy relationship impossible to achieve or maintain. By all appearances, this is behind an increase in divorce filings.
Time to Cut Ties
For those who are ready to end their marriage over political differences, one must presume there was more to the problem than simply an election. The increase in inquiries about divorce—anecdotally at least– has risen steeply. It’s more prominent than the usual January jump, and it started back in November, which is a usually slow month for divorce consultations. It looks as though couples with opposing political opinions are finding that they may have compatibility problems that spread well beyond election issues. Women, for example, are concluding that their partner’s views have really come into focus, and those views do not support women. Some women have simply decided to call it quits after coming face to face with feeling disrespected and undervalued.
Unhappiness Didn’t Happen Overnight
The truth is, many of these couples had likely been having problems long before politics took center stage. It’s possible that for some, the election underscored some of the difficulties they’d been struggling with previously, which simply boiled down to differing worldviews.
Winners and Losers
Because in politics there are clear winners and losers, the impact on those with differing political views can be intense. Someone on the winning side may think it’s amusing to poke fun at the losing team, but that hazing may not land well with the opposing side. With the political stakes feeling exceptionally high, anyone who is on the losing team may be quite sensitive to crowing and celebration. And with the general climate in society being particularly divisive these days, it’s not that hard to get overwhelmed with the conflict.
Another Worry…
In addition to the actual political and associated personal conflict, there are those who are quite concerned about the possibility of no-fault divorce disappearing in the near future. Will national, state, or local governments change the requirements to get a divorce? There are certainly some prominent national figures who have railed against no-fault divorce, and legislation to eliminate it has been introduced in more than one state. The future is anyone’s guess. But for anyone even remotely considering a divorce and hoping to bypass the complications of stricter requirements, now might be the time to file. Otherwise, if things go south, a divorce may cost more in terms of time, money, and anguish.
