Have You Considered a Divorce Coach or a Doula?
Anyone who’s been divorced can attest to the fact that divorce can be one of the most nerve-wracking events in life. It consumes your time, money, and all kinds of patience., There are 101 hazardous bridges you’ll have to cross: Who gets to keep the family dog? What about the artwork that you cherish, but that has been in your spouse’s family for a generation? And once the divorce is completed, how do you manage to co-parent positively, attend parent-teacher conferences, and attend extracurricular events for the kids without awkward facetime with your ex? If just thinking about all of these issues gives you a migraine, maybe a divorce doula would be a good idea for you.
What is a Divorce Doula?
As you begin the arduous process of a divorce, you will probably experience a range of emotions: sorrow and remorse, annoyance and powerlessness, fury and bitterness. Maybe even some moments of elation. Throughout all of this, wouldn’t it be lovely to have someone by your side to help you navigate the legal and emotional landscape? That is precisely what a doula can do. The word doula comes from the ancients and means female servant in Greek. Doulas have been helping people through difficult life transitions such as childbirth and death through the ages. Divorce can be one of the toughest transitions of all, so having a doula available to assist makes a lot of sense. And when doulas aren’t available, divorce coaches provide much the same services.
Doulas and Coaches
Divorce resembles getting married and having a family in that everyone’s experience is unique, and there’s no manual to get you through the difficult moments. Many people who are going through a divorce are a bit disoriented and spend their time unloading all of their thoughts and feelings in their lawyer’s office. That’s okay—but it can be expensive when attorneys charge by the hour. Instead, many people in modern times are looking toward doulas or divorce coaches to get the information and encouragement they need. While they have some training and experience in divorce laws and they clearly are willing to nurture besieged divorcees, they, themselves, are not attorneys or therapists. That means they can provide those struggling through divorce with a shoulder to cry on, along with advice on how to proceed, without charging you an arm and a leg.
