Is Getting a Paternity Test the Right Decision?

Let’s say that you’re in a romantic relationship and there’s a baby on the way. If there is any question as to the identity of the biological father you may be considering looking into paternity testing. But is that the right move? Perhaps you’re hesitant to infer that there is any question as to who fathered the child, as it could result in a bit of relationship turbulence. It comes down to this: whether you are the mother or the (potential) father, whether you are married or simply dating, knowing the truth about who fathered the child is beneficial in many ways.
Considerations for Men
If you are a man who is unsure that you are the father of a child, perhaps you’re not thrilled about the possibility of bringing up a youngster who is not your biological child. Fair enough. It’s perfectly understandable for someone who suspects that someone else is the father to resist taking on the legal, financial, and other responsibilities associated with fatherhood.
On the other hand, If you are excited about being a father, a paternity test that proves a biological relationship will provide you with the legal rights you deserve if the romantic relationship does not last, including:
- The ability to pursue sole- or joint-custody;
- The right to visitation;
- The ability to share in decision-making related to the child.
Naturally, these rights come with the responsibility to help support the child financially, emotionally, and otherwise.
Considerations for Women
One of the most critical reasons a paternity test can be helpful for women is that the costs of raising the child can be shared with the biological father. Even if the father refuses to be involved in raising the baby, he will still be legally obligated to pay child support in an amount based on the earnings you each have. It could be a significant reason to seek clarity on paternity.
Keep in mind, however, that if you’re interested in the financial assistance a father can provide, you should also be prepared for the father to assert his right to share in the raising of the child. He will be legally authorized to seek custody and to participate in making decisions relating to significant issues, including judgments related to education, religion, medical issues, and more. If you do not want to give up power in these areas, you may want to rethink the idea of insisting on a paternity test just so you can collect child support– although the man can do so against your wishes if desired.
For the Child
Inarguably, children are curious about who their parents are. Not only does knowing the answer provide a certain level of emotional comfort; it can also be important in terms of health issues, heredity, insurance, and inheritance. If there’s a downside for kids, it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly what it is.
