Men: Don’t Make These Common Mistakes in Divorce

MistakesAvoid_

Getting divorce is a big deal.  Unfortunately, far too many men are blind sighted, feel guilty, or simply are buried in ideas about having to be a good guy in divorce, and they don’t take the necessary steps to protect themselves. Your emotions are high, and that makes it more important than ever to get help from an experienced local divorce attorney who can weigh matters objectively and ensure that you don’t get a raw deal.  Avoid some of these common mistakes, which could have long-term consequences:

  • Finalizing decisions prior to discussing them with your attorney;
  • Allowing your spouse to initiate the divorce instead of you doing it;
  • Agreeing to use the same divorce attorney as your spouse;
  • Letting your emotions cloud your judgment;
  • Moving out before your case is filed;
  • Agreeing to partial settlements before all matters are considered;
  • Splitting assets without thinking about the tax consequences;
  • Listing to friends and family who think they know the law;
  • Neglecting to address child tax credits when hammering out custody;
  • Agreeing to a parenting time schedule that lacks specificity;
  • Agreeing to let your spouse notify you of school and medical issues rather than dealing directly with providers yourself;
  • Forgetting to allocate vacation points or frequent flier miles in the settlement;
  • Neglecting to address debt in the settlement;
  • Forgetting to protect your credit in relation to debt being assumed by your spouse;
  • Neglecting to call out your responsibilities as to children’s medical expenses;
  • Trying to hide assets;
  • Overlooking steps to ensure that your spouse has shared all assets;
  • Neglecting to set aside money that may be required for future child support or alimony orders;
  • Self-medicating to get through the stress;
  • Disrespecting, humiliating, or provoking your spouse;
  • Failing to take care of yourself;
  • Posting unfavorable pictures or discussions publicly.

Instead, Do This:

Getting through a divorce, with all of the questions and upheaval, requires a lot of you when you may not be feeling like your best self. That means you’re going to have to take a breath and try to be rational throughout the process:

  • Join a therapy group;
  • Rely on friends and family for support;
  • Start a new hobby;
  • Be physically active;
  • Eat and sleep properly;
  • Prioritize your children;
  • Remain respectful and supportive of the kids’ relationship to your soon-to-be ex;
  • Consistently involve yourself in the kids’ school, medical issues, and extra-curricular activities;
  • Be realistic about challenges and opportunities ahead;
  • Be honest and frank with your attorney.
