Women’s Attitudes on Prenups Shifting

Not long ago the topic of a prenup could cause an argument in a relationship without fail. Certainly, a discussion that contemplates the possibility of divorce before you’ve walked down the aisle is less than romantic. But these days things are changing, and couples are more willing to have a frank discussion about assets and debt before they tie the knot.
Women can be in Trouble Post Divorce
The financial figures relating to women’s financial security following a divorce are pretty grim. While men tend to preserve their financial stability, the income level for women may drop by as much as 40 percent in the first year following divorce That can mean a drop in the standard of living by over 70 percent! Hence, it’s no shocker that one out five women lead a life of poverty following divorce.
Sacrifice Can Lead to Poverty
For far too many women, especially those dealing with gray divorce, years and years were devoted to homemaking and raising children. These women don’t have their own health insurance, pension plan, or 401k plan. Even if they did work outside the home, women customarily earn less for the same work in this country, so their retirement plans are not nearly as stalwart.
Consider Your Money…
Many women could benefit from a prenup simply because they sacrificed their own career aspirations while supporting their husbands’ ambitions, including education and career growth. Although it may have been done willingly, the financial disadvantage should be recognized and accounted for. Conversely, plenty of women today have entered marriage financially stronger than they did in the past. Many have vocations that pay well; some have inherited a dishy sum from their Boomer-parents. The old rule that insisted that talking about money before you get married is impolite simply doesn’t meet today’s needs. Not only are women earning more and relying less on their husbands financially in many cases; in some situations, women are earning more than their husbands. Having a conversation about finances can protect women’s fiscal standing in the event of a divorce. Many women are finding that treating a prenup like a business plan is shrewd and efficient.
And More…
Imagine someone who started up a business and built it with their own blood, sweat, and tears. Do they really want to hazard having to share that business in the event of a divorce, or worse, having to shred it apart to pay off your spouse? In another scenario, picture a teacher that never made a ton of money, but who has a great pension plan. Isn’t it a good idea to protect those dollars for your old age?
